AmeriCorps Finalist
Dear Editor: I am writing to congratulate Sitka AmeriCorps Program member Ashley Hart Nessler who has qualified as a finalist for a national Corpsmember of the year award.
The Corpsmember of the year nomination is a national distinction available this year to only 17 of 75,000 Corpsmembers. It celebrates the achievement of extraordinary young adults from America’s Service and Conservation Corps in leadership and civic engagement. The winner of this year’s award will be received in February at the Corps Network’s 2020 national conference in Washington, D.C. You can learn more about the Corpsmember of the year award by visiting https://corpsnetwork.org/meet-the-2020-corpsmember-of-the-year-finalist/.
The Sitka AmeriCorps Program where Ashley serves is now in its 12th year and serves the entire Sitka School District and nonprofits. Members like Ashley provide academic support and enrichment activities to public school students through tutoring and mentoring in both one-on-one and small group sessions. The overarching goal of Ashley’s service is to mitigate the negative effects of adverse childhood experiences, which are nationally recognized as especially high in Sitka and other Alaskan communities.
The work Ashley does to strengthen Sitka’s public schools through volunteer service is innovative and noteworthy. When you see Ashley, I encourage you to congratulate this outstanding addition to our community and learn more about the change she is making through AmeriCorps.
