Police Blotter
    Police received the following calls by 8 a.m. today:
December 16
    The post office reported an attempted break-in of a box at the post office.
    At 9:45 a.m. police helped on the home visit of someone on probation.
    Police were asked to help get a rental car returned.
    A school asked for help dealing with a domestic violence issue between students.
    At 5:50 p.m. a caller asked police to document bear activity occurring about 2 a.m. on Rands Drive. The bear tried to get into garbage in a room with sliding doors, failed to get in then went to a neighbor’s where it dragged garbage toward Remington Way. Troopers and Fish and Game were advised.
    A resident asked for medical help for her former husband, and he was picked up by an ambulance.
    At 9:54 p.m. a bear was reported seen in a Rands Drive backyard. It then continued up the mountainside.
    At 10:10 p.m. a caller reported a truck in a ditch near New Archangel Street. No one was in the truck when officers arrived. The owner was told the truck would be towed if not moved within the hour.
   
Sitka Police
    Izaak Needham, 50, was arrested Monday on a charge of assault in the fourth degree (domestic violence) and misconduct involving a controlled substance in the fifth degree.

In Court
    Noel E. See, 49, was sentenced to 300 days, with 186 suspended, on a charge of assault in the fourth degree. He will be on probation for two years and is not to consume alcohol. Charges of violating release conditions and assault in the fourth degree were dismissed.
    Noe Winrod, 28, of Gig Harbor, Wash., was fined $15,000, with $10,000 suspended, for commercial fishing on a vessel that exceeded the 58-foot limit. His boat was 60 feet, 11 inches, excluding anchor rollers, the citation said. He is to pay restitution, and will be on probation a year.
    Kasper Kurtz, 22, was fined $500 for driving in violation of an instruction permit.

Emergency Calls
    Sitka Fire Department dispatched ambulances at 7 p.m. and 8:24 p.m. Monday.
   
Coast Guard
    A Coast Guard Air Station Sitka helicopter medevacked an 82-year-old Hoonah man late Thursday night after he sustained a hip fracture. He was flown to Sitka for treatment.
