Happy Holidays, Sitka!

Dear Editor: The Sitka Cancer Survivor’s Society would like to take this opportunity to express our gratitude to Sitka businesses, organizations, individuals and anonymous donors who have given of their time, talent and treasures this last year.

Our mission statement is “To honor, educate, comfort and inspire individuals and families affected by cancer.” With the generosity of this community we continue to be able to give $500 mini-grants to individuals in Sitka in need of assistance who are dealing with cancer. The gift of the mini-grant makes a difference in their lives.

The Path of Hope Park is an inspirational park meant to give hope to any person facing life’s tough challenges. It is located above the Moller Park running track and if you have not visited it, we would encourage you to do so. The park is a gift to the community of Sitka from cancer survivors and a place to reflect, enjoy and think about our futures.

In addition, we sponsor the Cancer Support Group which meets at the Pioneers Home Manager’s House once a month on a Sunday so a big thank you to MaryBeth Palof for continuing to lead the group and provide refreshments.

The Ocean Wave Quilt Guild has again donated their beautiful quilt for the drawing on Dec. 11 and the lucky winner was Rita Rush. Our appreciation to all of the quilters and volunteers who helped sell tickets and especially this community for purchasing the tickets.

To the Sitka Women’s Golf Association, the Pioneer Bar, Abby’s Reflection, the Ocean Wave Quilters Guild, Sitka Emblem Club, S.E. Radiation Oncology Center plus so many individual donors – THANK YOU!!!

Wishing everyone a beautiful Merry Christmas and Happy New Year 2015. Blessings.

We’re wrapping up our fourth year of spreading health and happiness to all ages and fitness levels, thanks to dedicated staff and dozens of volunteers who keep your community center thriving. To say “thank you, Sitka” we’ll not only be open Christmas Day, but free for everyone. Bring family and friends, your new toys, get a little exercise, shoot some hoops, and say hi at the Hames Center – free on Christmas Day, from 1 to 4 p.m.

Tamale Fundraiser

Dear Editor: You ran a letter about seeking volunteers making tamales as a fundraiser for Blessings in a Backpack some time ago. Folks might want to know what happened. Kathy O’Gara wrote to say that the crowding-$300 we raised feeds two students every weekend the entire school year, and buys some extra fruit for all the students we are feeding (52 students this year). Good work, tamale makers!
