Economic Development

Dear Editors: I would like to correct a frequent criticism of the city, and to make a prediction.

First, on all sides I hear the complaint that we are paying for a hydroelectric project that was not needed and that is boosting our electric rates through the roof for no good reason. That could not be farther from the facts. The hydroelectric improvements and the debt that goes with them, are a wise and far-seeing investment in Sitka’s future. Because we have abundant and ultimately economical power, we have the foundation for clean industry. Other parts of the country are starving for power and do not have hydro capacity.

We need to promote Sitka to clean industry in those areas. This is a strategy for economic development whose time has come. Business will move here for the high quality of living and because we have the electrical generation potential that they must have and can not get just anywhere.

Alaska may be in fiscal trouble. Sitka has a much better situation. My prediction is that we will play our hand well and succeed in building on the accomplishments that have set us up for success.

As we look at our other needs for infrastructure, we should plan with an eye to setting up the conditions for further economic development.

John Welsh, Sitka
