Giving Tree

Dear Editor: The Giving Tree was an amazing success this year. Thank you to all who took tags and so thoughtfully and generously gave gifts to those we serve.

Also, a big thank you to the Wells Fargo Bank for hosting the tree and the gift drop box; we could not do this without you.

A special thanks to all the volunteers who made tags, collected and distributed over 125 gifts to the Sitka Pioneers Home, Sitka Long Term Care, Sitkans Against Family Violence, Youth Advocates of Sitka and Head Start.

We wish all of Sitka a blessed New Year!

Julia Smith, Lauren Allen and the United Methodist Church of Sitka

Happy Holidays, Sitka!

Dear Editor: Another year and the Sitka Cancer Survivor’s Society would like to express our gratitude to Sitka businesses, organizations and individuals donors who have given of their time, talent and support to us this year. We especially want to thank the Sitka Community Hospital radiology department for their generous donation. We could not do what we do without you all!

Our mission statement is: “To honor, educate, comfort and inspire individuals and families affected by cancer.” With your continued generosity we have been able to increase our mini-grants to  $1,000 the first year, thereafter $500 per year up to five years to individuals in Sitka in need of assistance who are dealing with cancer. The gift of the mini-grants makes a difference in their lives. In 2019 to date, we have given out 26 of these mini-grants.

We were able to hold our third Sitka Cancer Survivors Celebration Event on Sunday, July 14, at our Path of Hope inspirational park. We had our treasure hunt with hidden treasures in the park. Big hit with the kids and the adults as well. With fun prizes. The Sitka Emblem Club 142 served delicious refreshments, a treat for all. We look forward every year to celebrate with cancer survivors. Hope you all continue to check out this beautiful park behind Moller Field by the running track.

We continue to sponsor the Cancer Support Group which is meeting on the third Sunday of the month, from 3 to 4 p.m. on the fourth floor boardroom at Mt. Edgecumbe Medical Center. A big thanks to our support group leader Diane Linn. We are planning to change location the first of the year. Stay tuned for the new location. We encourage those dealing with cancer to attend, family and friends are encouraged as well.

We once again held our quilt raffle. A big thank you to the 20-plus members of the Ocean Wave Quilt Guild who made and donated their beautiful queen-sized ‘‘The Batik Beauty” quilt, and was quilted by Vicki Swanson.  Also the prize of moccasins made to fit and donated by Linda Janacek. The drawing was held on Sunday, Dec. 8, at the Elks Lodge for our two prizes. Our lucky winners were Kendra Pountney, who chose the quilt, and Hannah Green who chose the moccasins. Thanks toSitka Emblem Club for the use of their gambling permit, and a special thanks to Bonnie Richards who heads up the selling of our raffle ticket sales every year! Our appreciation to all the quilters and volunteers who helped sell tickets and especially to this community for purchasing the tickets.

Sitka Cancer Survivor Society says thank you to the Sitka Sentinel, KIFW, and Raven Radio, for all the PR and the PSAs!

We wish you all a very Happy New Year 2020! Blessings,
