Newspapers

Dear Editor: Hardcopy newspapers are facing declining subscriptions, declining ad revenue and declining readership in the midst of competition from e-journalism.

The Poulson family – owners, managers and editors of the Daily Sitka Sentinel – deserve our collective thanks for their dedicated professionalism as they have continued to produce a quality small-town newspaper amidst all these challenges.

In my journeys I have found few small-town newspapers that have even come close to our local paper in quality.   All I can say is THANK YOU to Sandy and Thad Poulson and their staff for all that they do to make Sitka a better community.

We trust that the Sentinel staff will continue to diligently pursue that same quality coverage of local, state and national coverage that provides Sitkans with a balanced perspective.

Harvey Brandt, Sitka

Giving Tree

Dear Editor: The Giving Tree was a amazing success this year. Thank you to all who took tags and so thoughtfully and generously gave gifts to those we serve. Also, a big thank you to the Wells Fargo Bank for hosting the tree and the gift drop box; we could not do this without you. A special thanks to Amra Kojic, AFS exchange student from Bosnia Herzegovina, who volunteered to organize the gifts so they could be delivered by many other volunteers.

We wish all of Sitka a blessed New Year!

Julia Smith, Lauren Allen and the United Methodist Church of Sitka
