Sitka Visit
Dear Editor: Recently my husband and I returned from an 11-day cruise to Alaska. This was our third cruise to Alaska, but the first one that included your town, Sitka.
We were very pleased to walk around and enjoy all the green spaces as well as the stores. It was so refreshing not to see 50 different jewelry stores with everyone trying to get you to buy jewelry.
We thoroughly enjoyed the quiet of the St. Michael’s Cathedral. We were pleased to see real stores for the people who live there and the artisans who worked in or for the stores.
It was well worth the bus ride from the ship to visit Sitka and I would gladly recommend it to anyone going on a trip to Alaska.
Linda Meyer, Westbank, B.C., Canada

House Numbers
Dear Editor: On behalf of the Sitka Fire and Police Department, we would like to report the following and thank the sponsors who came forward to contribute their skills and donations. Count Me In – Sitka House Number campaign is a success.
Thus far, over 600 property owners have received free house numbers for their homes and commercial properties. Rest assured, the homeowners who require a post at the driveway – we haven’t forgotten you and it shall get done.
The U.S. Post Office granted permission to adhere orange/black reflective numbers on residential post boxes along Halibut Point Road, Sawmill Creek Road, and Lake, Peterson and Edgecumbe streets. Locate a post box and the number will advise what unit block you are in. Huge help – thank you.
First responders appreciate the 100 percent cooperation with the mobile home owners. SFD will continue to encourage the court owners to install signage at the entrance of each driveway by fall of 2014.
The free numbers offer remains in effect. Stop by the Sitka Fire Department for your reflective numbers and assistance.
In keeping with “shop local,” we’d like to thank Sitka True Value and Spenard Builders Supply for ordering the numbers. We would also like to thank Sea Mart, Daily Sitka Sentinel, Sitka Soup, KSCT TV (Alice Smith), KCAW, KIFW Radio and (Juneau) Capital City Weekly for their public relations and community support.
Again, without hesitation, our sponsors rose to the challenge to assist first responders and companies who make deliveries: Agave Mexican Restaurant, Alps Federal Credit Union, Anderson Land Planning, Arrowhead Transfer, City and Borough of Sitka utilities department, Elks Club, Foreign Auto-motive, Horan & Company, Murray Pacific Supplies, Petro Marine Supply, Sitka Moose Lodge, Sitka Ready Mix, Sitka Realty, Sitka Taxi Company, Sitka Woman’s Club, White Elephant Shop and Good Samaritans with ‘‘I want to help’’ cash donations. Please support these companies the next time you need their product and services.
    Again, thank you.

$1 for Every $2
Dear Editor: Exciting news, hot off the press, on Monday President Obama announced an enormously important commitment by the United States to contribute $1 to the Global Fund to Fight AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria for every $2 contributed by other donors, up to $5 billion over the next three years.
This announcement comes as world leaders gather in Washington, D.C., to make their own pledges toward a goal of $15 billion, which will finance lifesaving treatment, prevention and care for millions. With the latest science and epidemiology, building on the efforts of the last decade, we are no longer just talking about fighting these three diseases – we are talking about defeating them. We would like to thank all Sitkans who supported the U.S. commitment to this pledge.
