Toy Boats
Dear Editor: The Sitka Maritime Heritage Society would like to thank all of the families who came out to the Japonski Island Boathouse on Saturday, Nov. 30, for our third annual Toy Boat Making event. It was incredible to see the variety of boats the kids were able to make with the same seven parts and their creativity – no two were alike! It’s also equally great to see kids engaged in a maritime-themed activity with the support of their families and possibly sparking their interest in our region’s heritage.
This activity was supported by a grant from the Sitka Woman’s Club, for which we are very thankful. It was also made possible through the many volunteer hours carefully preparing each handmade piece. A special thanks to volunteers Terry Perensovich and Greg Watchers for the time and materials donated towards this event. Thank you to Precision Boatworks for providing workshop space, and to the many local businesses that post our event flyers and the Daily Sitka Sentinel, KCAW, KIFW and the Sitka Soup for helping us advertise this event. Toy Boat Making has quickly become a favorite tradition, one that we hope to continue in the years to come!
We are currently in our Boathouse 2020 Capital Campaign, toward completing the rehabilitation of the Japonski Island Boathouse. This will enable the vision of offering youth activities like this, and more, year-round. If you are interested in supporting our mission or getting involved in preserving and sharing our region’s maritime heritage, please visit our website: www.sitkamaritime.org.

Swim Team Support
Dear Editor: The Sitka High School swim and dive team would like to express our deep gratitude to the community and businesses of Sitka for all their generous support. We had an amazingly successful season, and we could not have done it without the community’s involvement. Thanks to the businesses who donated silent auction items for our fundraising dinner; thanks to the businesses who donated to our travel fund; and thanks to the folks who hired us to help you get chores done at home and on your boats.
We are so lucky to live in a community who goes above and beyond for their youths. Thanks to Allen Marine, Arrowhead Transfer, Fisherman’s Quay, Hames Corporation, Longliner Lodge and Suites, the Fish family, North Pacific Seafoods, LFS Marine Supplies, Channel Club, BEAK Restaurant, Delta Western, Edward Jones Investments, Cabin Fever Gallery, the Black family, SEARHC, Sitka Tribe of Alaska, Larry Csonka, Abby’s Reflection, Bayview Pub, The Cellar, the Fate family, Harry Race, Highliner Coffee, Island Artists Cooperative, Ben Franklin, the Chocolate Moose, Life Balance Chiropractic, Ludvig’s, Mean Queen, K & E Excavators, Old Harbor Books, Orion Sporting Goods, NSRAA, Pizza Express, Precision Boatworks, Russian American Company, Shee Atika Balanced Accounting, Sitka Bazaar, Sitka Realty, Fur Gallery, Sitka Vision Clinic, Spenard Builders Supply, the Totten family, Sitka True Value, Wintersong Soap Company, Work and Rugged Gear Store, and Yellow Jersey Cycle Shop.
We’d also like to give special thanks to Kevin Knox, Baranof Barracuda Swim Club head coach, for the MANY hours spent organizing our two home meets including the amazingly successful first-ever competition at the MEHS Aquatics Center. Without Kevin and the support of the entire BBSC team of volunteers, these meets would not be possible.
Your support enabled us to travel to all our meets and represent Sitka, but more importantly, your support enabled these young men and women to continue their journey of growing into outstanding citizens and amazing adults. These kids learned dedication, realized the benefits of their hard work, and learned to balance multiple demands on their time. Your generosity was and is a vital part of the success of these young people.
Thank you, Sitka!
