Fish Tale
Dear Editor: The Blatchley Middle School Music Program would like to announce our next fundraiser. We will be selling items to the public that will help one of the larger problems facing Southeast Alaska: Salmo Salar Photokeratitis. After reading several studies that point to Salmo Salar Photokeratitis (snow blindness in salmon) as one of the leading causes of diminishing salmon returns to our area, students have voted to raise money for the band program and help our fish stocks at the same time. Therefore, starting Dec. 15, music students will be selling small UV blocking swim goggles that are specially designed to fit salmon. It is hoped these will be carefully fitted to any salmon that fishermen in Sitka catch, but intend to release, in the next year. Salmo Salar Photokeratitis is a dangerous condition that leaves many salmon disorientated and unable to find their way to the spawning grounds; our special goggles will combat this desadle effect. Consider our goggles the perfect holiday gift for the fishermen in your life.
Thank you.
