Gus Adams
Dear Editor: I was sad to learn of the passing of Gus Adams. I first met Gus through my time on the former city Long Range Planning and Economic Development Commission.
We were both part of the Housing That’s Affordable Subcommittee with these goals: the development of housing that is affordable, education of housing issues, and community planning for housing options. He was an integral part of the early planning for creating a community land trust in Sitka.
His former experience as director of the Baranof Island Housing Authority provided needed insight and direction for accomplishing our tasks.
In later years, the Sitka CLT board of directors would often meet in the small, ocean view Gus Adams room at the library. I always thought that a fitting place for us to meet and plan for affordable housing in Sitka.
Thank you, Gus, for your many years of service to Sitka. May you rest in peace.
Mim McConnell, Sitka
Thank You, UAS
Dear Editor: Blatchley Middle School would like to thank UAS-Sitka for hosting us in November. The University of Alaska Southeast invited our sixth through eighth grade woodshop students for an educational introduction to the welding program.
Students were given a tour and demonstrations of a few of the great programs and projects happening at UAS. In addition to visiting the welding lab, students got to see the progress on the totem pole being carved on campus, and to glimpse students working in the aquaculture program.
Special thanks to Dave Clark, Luke Gibes, Katie Sill and Paul Kraft. Thank you for an educational and inspiring visit. And thank you to the Daily Sitka Sentinel for sharing the story of this opportunity with our community.
Jeremy Peterson,
Blatchley Middle School
