Renaming Response
Dear Editor: I read the letter criticizing Mr. Fulton about his choice of words about renaming Baranof Elementary and I read his apology for his poor choice of words. I have been silent about local issues for several years except a little commentary once in awhile on social media, but knowing Mr. Fulton for some time I felt compelled to weigh in. I got to know Mr. Fulton for several years when I worked at the Sitka Rocky Gutierrez Airport and at the time I was serving on the Sitka Tribal Council.
When Mr. Fulton, ‘‘Tim,’’ was a new School Board member he was real interested in talking to me about what was best for our Native students and I could see that he was earnestly curious about how to have greater input from the Native community. I mentioned that he could dialogue with the Tribal Council and probably get the most input that way.
We didn’t have to wait long. I think it was the very next meeting Tim was there to see what was the best way he could help as a School Board member and he was a regular attendant at the tribal meeting up until the time I left. There is much more that can be said for Mr. Fulton’s interest and sincerity in ‘‘creating an educational system where every student has an equal opportunity to succeed.’’ I take him at his word.
