Birthing Options

Dear Editor: Pregnant people need better birthing options in Sitka. It is a person’s right to be able to choose how and where they want to birth their baby. Currently there is only one option for birth in Sitka. A hospital birth assisted by an obstetrician may be what some people want to choose for their deliveries but for others, it may not be their first choice. Why are there no midwives in Sitka? Midwives can deliver babies at a hospital, birth center, or home birth setting.

Sitka NEST – Nurture, Empower, Support and Transform Birth – met on Nov. 30 to discuss these questions and is making progress bringing alternative birthing options to Sitka. The next Sitka NEST meeting will be in January, the date is yet to be set. For any who want to offer support, Sitka NEST can also be contacted by email at sitkanest@gmail.com.

Assembly Vote

Dear Editor: Re: 6 to 1 vote R.F.P.

Sitka City and Borough Assembly member Richard Wein has yet to conform to mediocrity.

How long can Richard hold out? Place your bets. He has entered an ultra-marathon. Good luck and godspeed.
