Donny Garrity Dies at 60; Celebration of Life Tonight

Posted

Donald “Donny” Charles Garrity passed away on January 18, 2026, at the age of 60, his grieving family has announced.

A celebration of his life will be held 6-8 p.m. tonight at the Sheet’ká Ḵwáan Naa Kahídi.

"Please join us to remember Donny, share the many memories he leaves behind, and enjoy the potluck-style gathering together," his family said.

Donny was born on March 19, 1965, in Sitka, to James and Delores “Dee” Garrity, the youngest of four brothers. He was adored by family and friends for his warmth, generosity, big ol’ smile, and deep love for family. Donny touched the lives of many and leaves behind a legacy of kindness, hard work, and plenty of fun. He was quick to jab friends about their sports teams – his favorite team was the Seattle Seahawks.

Donny was a Tlingít Eagle of the Chookeneidi clan.

He graduated from Sitka High School in 1983 and went on to pursue a career in marine mechanics, where he was respected for his dedication and professionalism. Many boaters enjoyed their time on the water thanks to Donny’s skilled work. He spent 25 years at Allen Marine and many years working at his brother’s shop, Hansen Marine Service.

Outside of work, Donny loved boating, camping, fishing, and attending family and cultural events. Dancing, especially swing dancing, was always a good time with “Disco Donny,” a nickname given to him by his cousins long ago.

Donny was an enrolled Tribal Citizen of Sitka Tribe of Alaska and Tlingit and Haida as well as a shareholder of Sealaska Corporation, Huna Totem Corporation, and Shee Atiká Incorporated.

He also was a member of the Sitka Moose Lodge, American Legion Post 13 and the Sitka Elks Lodge.

Donny is survived by his son, Levi Harriman; his brothers, Paddy Hansen (Deena) of Sitka, Garrett Hansen (Kris) of Winston, Georgia, and Jon Garrity of Concord, California; and his grandchildren, Marcus, Marciana, David, and Kailley Harriman.

He is also survived by many nieces and nephews, including Chatham Hansen, Carley Snyder (Brandon), Tosha Taylor (Darrell), Jamie Loughnan (Steve), Cody Hansen (Katelyn), and Parker Hansen (Rachel), as well as many cousins and good friends.

Donny was preceded in death by his mother and father; brother James “Jim” Garrity Jr.; grandfather Charlie Dick; and grandmother Annie Dick.

"Once you knew Donny, he was your buddy" his family said. "He lived a good life and will be deeply missed by all who knew him. Donny’s spirit and love will live on in the memories of those he leaves behind. May he rest in peace. Go Hawks!"
