Dear Editor: October is Domestic Violence Awareness Month — a time to remember why organizations like Sitkans Against Family Violence exist. For too long, domestic violence was shrouded in shame. Shelters were created as safe, confidential places where survivors could be supported and believed.
We still hear the question, “Why didn’t they just leave?” But domestic violence isn’t about anger — it’s about power and control. Abusers use manipulation, fear and isolation to keep survivors trapped. Leaving is rarely simple or safe; it’s often the most dangerous time.
At SAFV, we believe every survivor deserves safety and respect — no matter their choices or circumstances.
You use alcohol or drugs to cope — we stand with you.
You decided to stay — we stand with you.
You didn’t file a police report — we stand with you.
You’re struggling to work — we stand with you.
You worry about immigration — we stand with you.
You feel ashamed — we stand with you.
There is no right way to survive domestic violence. Every survivor deserves safety, support, and respect.
