The Mt. Edgecumbe High Lady Braves won their opening game in the 3A state basketball tournament Wednesday, downing the Valdez Buccaneers 49-34, in Anchorage. The Lady Braves face Monroe Catholic this afternoon in the semi-final round.
Also Wednesday, the Sitka High Lady Wolves lost in a narrow game against the Barrow Whalers, 47-45. Sitka plays Bethel today in the consolation bracket.
On the boys side, Mt. Edgecumbe toppled the Kenai Kardinals 43-37 Wednesday morning and will go head-to-head against Grace Christian this evening.
The Braves “did a great job of playing through a rough day,” coach Archie Young said in a text message. “They stuck with it and made big plays when we had to.”
