Edward Gamble Sr., a lifelong Angoon resident, died Feb. 20, 2016, at SEARHC-Mt. Edgecumbe Hospital. He was 80.
A celebration of his life will be held 7 p.m. Friday in Juneau, then he will be taken to his final resting place in Angoon for a memorial Sunday, Feb. 28. A graveside service will be held Monday.
Edward was born May 4, 1935, in Angoon, the son of Nadja Davis and Johnnie Gamble.
He wore many hats during his lifetime. He was a U.S. Army paratrooper in the 82nd Airborne Division; served as mayor of Angoon and as an Alaska Native Brotherhood councilman; and was a chief, a chef, a husband, loving parent, and grandfather to his many grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
He enjoyed hunting, fishing, and traveling to visit his many siblings and grandchildren throughout Alaska.
He liked helping his fellow Alaskans throughout his community, both as president of Kootznoowoo and ANB Camp 7. He was a valued member of the teacher core, and a huge advocate of his hometown teams at the Gold Medal tournaments in Juneau.
His devotion to his family and friends was beyond compare, and he will be greatly missed by many.
Edward was preceded in death by his parents, Nadja Davis and Johnnie Gamble; his sisters, Elizabeth Frank and Jessie Jim; and daughters Brenda Lee Gamble and Marilyn Renee Gamble.
He is survived by his wife of 55 years, Dorothy Gamble, of Angoon; sons Edward Gamble Jr. and Johnnie Gamble, both of Angoon; his daughters Dorris Williams of Angoon, Edie Mass of Juneau and Jessica Sheakley of Juneau; and sisters Irene Paul of Sitka, Pauline James of Kake, Sophie Frank of Juneau, Ella Bennett of Juneau and Roseanne Hotch of Klukwan.
His grandchildren are Nadja Gamble, Shaenel Gamble, Jaymes Gamble, Roseanna Williams, Samantha Raney, Roger Williams Jr. and Yvonne Williams. He also is survived by many cherished great-grandchildren.
