Bike Safety
Dear Editor: Dear Mom and Dad, maybe you have two pre-teen daughters who like to ride a small mini-bike with dark clothes, no lights and no helmet in the McDonald’s area on Halibut Point Road about 8 p.m. on Wednesday evening. Maybe you want to explain the rules of the road to them and some safety ideas and that may help lengthen their life expectancy. Thank you.

Native Artists
Dear Editor: On Saturday, Jan. 26, the Friends of Sheldon Jackson Museum held a gala event at the museum to celebrate 25 years of the Native Artist Demonstrator Program. The event was a huge success attended by over 150 people.
I would like to thank the many individuals and organizations who contributed to the success of this event. Thank you to the community of Sitka for its on-going support of the Native Artist Demonstrators Program. Sitka has welcomed an incredible number of Native artists who have generously shared their art with Sitka’s summer visitors.
Thank you to the artists and community members who donated items for the silent auction. The proceeds from the auction will help Friends of Sheldon Jackson Museum bring artists from outside of Sitka to share their special talents with visitors and community during the 2013 summer season.
Thank you, to Rosemary Carlton for her vision making the Native Artist Demonstrator Program a reality. Thank you to the Friends of Sheldon Jackson Museum Board of Directors for their help in bringing this event together. A special thank you to the Sitka Fine Arts Camp for putting together a display of Native artists who have shared their expertise teaching at the camp as well as collaborating with the museum.
Thank you to Beth Garrison and Lisa Bykonen, Sheldon Jackson Museum staff, who did all the research necessary to create the 25 years of Native Artist Demonstrators presentation. Thank you to Ms. Garrison for narrating the presentation.
Also, thank you to the Gajaa Heen Tlingit dancers and Mt. Edgecumbe High School’s Athabaskan, Yup’ik and Inupiaq dance groups for their wonderful performances. In addition, a big thank you to musicians Dave Galanin, Ernie Eggleston, Gary Gouker and Bob Banghart for providing entertainment. Thank you, to Roby Littlefield for providing traditional Native food. Thank you to our guest speaker Steve Henrikson, curator of collections, from the Alaska State Museum in Juneau for his presentation “Alaska Native Headgear” and for the generous donation of housing for Mr. Henrikson by a member of the Friends of Sheldon Jackson Museum.
This event could not have happened without the participation of each of you. Thank you for your generous support.
