Roller Derby Charity
Dear Editor: On Jan. 31 the Sitka Sound Slayers, Sitka’s women’s flat track roller derby team, hosted their first home bout of 2015. The event, dubbed a “hometown charity bout,” raised money to provide support to Sitkans Against Family Violence.
The theme for the night was “Be Your Own Hero” and the Slayers faced off against each other to a sold-out crowd at the Hames Center. All skaters and coaches “paid to play” for the evening, that along with 15 percent of all ticket sales, and donations made by Slayers’ fans (including $126 raised by auctioning off two VIP tickets) resulted in a $953 total donation for SAFV.
The Slayers’ mission is to promote health, strength and positive self-image in women through the athletic sport of roller derby, which is why SAFV is such an important organization to partner with. SAFV supports our community in so many ways by acting as an advocate for victims of domestic violence, and providing education and prevention services to the communities of Sitka, Port Alexander, Kake and Angoon. It is a staunchly held belief by both organizations that strong, healthy women create successful, flourishing communities. The Slayers are excited to support the invaluable services that SAFV provides.
