Spelling Bee
Dear Editor: It is my pleasure to let those Sitkans who could not attend the February 9 Adult Spelling Bee at Harrigan Centennial Hall know the results. First place went to the team of Anna Schumacher and Lina Kapp, second was won by team Sapphire Giraffes with Harvey Brandt and Susan Brandt-Ferguson, and third place went to team Problem Children, David Ritchey and AJ.
This was a fund-raiser for the Sitka Public Library recognizing their 100th anniversary in cooperation with the Sitka Friends of the Library. Major thanks go to the sponsors who helped make this possible: DUCKfather, Harry Race Pharmacy, Jeff Budd Productions, First National Bank Alaska, Grace Brooks and Charles Morgan, the Sitka Soup, A/C Lakeside Grocery, Fate Accompli, the Beak Restaurant, Work and Rugged Gear, Sitka Studio of Dance, First Bank, the Hames Corporation, Old Harbor Books and Sitka True Value.
The amazing spelling crew that adroitly, nemine contradicente, and perspicaciously ran the program (spell those words without looking) were: Robert Woolsey, Spell Master extraordinary; Margot O’Connell, word- and sentence-smith – remarkable and prodigious; Leah Mason, keeping track of the life lines; Pam Steffes and Debbie Miller, marvelous spell-checkers; Shanik Morales-Tapia and Jim Clare, the punctual timers; Kari Sagel, Judicious Judge of the Rules; the Centennial Hall staff – super to work with and worthy of meritorious recognition making us at home; and Jeff Budd, doing this and that.
Thank you to the wonderful Sitka audience that clapped for the first ones out to the last ones standing. Much obliged!
