School Board

Dear Editor: Governor Walker has announced February as School Board Recognition Month, a time to honor school board members and to express appreciation for their contributions.

I would like to take this opportunity to publicly thank the dedicated members of the Sitka School Board: Deborah Yearwood, student representative; Tim Fulton, Tom Conley, Eric Van Cise, Cass Pook and Jennifer McNichol. This board represents, what I believe to be, the best of public education. They work extremely hard to provide every child in the district a quality education. They do so by making hard budget choices, difficult policy decisions, visiting schools, knowing many of the students, staff and parents, meeting with concerned parents, lobbying for more funding and many other tasks.

This country’s greatness has been forged by our belief that every citizen should be educated. Our School Board believes in every child and believes that every child deserves a quality public education. Please join with me in thanking our hardworking and dedicated School Board.

Mary Wegner, Ed.D.

Superintendent

Sitka School District

Volunteer of Year

Dear Editor: Across Alaska, there are many dedicated volunteers whose helping hands and caring hearts positively impact the lives of others. The First Lady’s Volunteer of the Year Awards seeks to recognize these outstanding volunteers who often go unheralded. Please take a moment to nominate someone you know who is making a difference by volunteering. Nominations are due by March 8, 2016. Details and nomination forms are available at volunteerawards.alaska.gov

Volunteers, you are the heart and soul of our communities. Thank you for selflessly serving and generously giving of your time and talents.

Alaska First Lady Donna Walker
