Dog Waste
Dear Editor: I have lived in Sitka for over 12 years. As a dog, I am so embarrassed when I see that other dogs’ owners have decreased in pick ups of doggy poop over the years. I remember when the sidewalks and paths where clean. Now there is poop everywhere, even right on the sidewalks. SJ used to be such a nice place to play. Now there is so much cleanup work to be done there, my mom has no time to play with me. Dog owners, please help!
My mom says there are more important things in the world to worry about, but to me this is important. I want dogs to be accepted in Sitka and I want all dogs to be well taken care of. Part of being well taken care of is to think of others, such as handicapped people and blind individuals, who cannot avoid or see the poop. Yucky!
Besides, I am getting tired of my mom making me go this way and that way to get around the poop, for who wants to step in it. Not me!

Banff Film Festival
Dear Editor: What a big night!
It never ceases to amaze me what Sitka offers. On Tuesday night, we were honored to be one of 400 host sites (all around the globe) for the Banff Mountain Film Festival World Tour. Passionate, inspiring films to ignite our spirits filled the Performing Arts Center.
Such a great turn out and it takes a large effort behind the scenes to create a night like this and we want to thank the PAC for providing top notch equipment (and staff) that meet the high standards that make it possible. The volunteers running the films (big job!) were Francis Wegman-Lawless and Brian Richardson. Our Banff “road warrior” stayed at Westmark Sitka that provided incredible, first rate accommodations (she loved it, thank you, John.) It takes a supportive hand from KIFW, KCAW, Sentinel, and all the businesses that hang posters for us. Old Harbor Books continues to provide an incredible service selling tickets for our events and Russells, Yellow Jersey Bike Shop, and Hames Center donated generous prizes for the crowd.
Also, the volunteers that greeted you included: Shoshauna Schmidt, Melody Kingsley, Mary Wood, Peggy Fedoroff, Abigail Long, Xaver Clarke and Michael Mausbach. Proceeds from the festival go to a variety of non-profits that will motivate and inspire folks to actively meet their fitness goals through the Hames Wellness Fund, stretching themselves through personal and group exercise, sports, and challenging elements such as the climbing wall and slackline.
Thanks to all who came and joined in that night! You made it a great success and together we will be able to keep the Banff Film Fest coming and goodness happening throughout Sitka!
We already look forward to next year,
