SSD Contributions

Dear Editor: To the many generous SSD Student Activity Fund contributors (both in time and money):

Thank you very much for your consideration and kind donation to our activities program at Sitka High School.

As most are now aware, the costs to run our activity programs have increased rapidly with loss of adequate ferry service and increased airfare rates. At this point most our teams are forced to fly Alaska Airlines to most competitions – which quadruples the cost when compared with Alaska Marine Highway travel. While programs are constantly fundraising to generate adequate funding, there are still participation fees that are associated with our activities. The establishment of the Student Activity Fund is a tremendous step in a positive direction to assist our students with these personal costs. As coaches of Sitka High School Activities, we want to extend our gratitude for your efforts to assist and support our students.

The Student Activity Fund is a needs-based scholarship program offered to Sitka High School and Pacific High School students to cover the cost of registration fees for Sitka School District extracurricular activities. Students that qualify will now be able to fulfill the participation fee of the program without undue strain on the finances of the family.

Thank you for your kindness in recognizing that we have many students who need assistance. The activities programs are successful at Sitka High School because of the generosity of our community, businesses, alumni, families, teachers and individuals that contribute in so many ways – THANK YOU ALL!

We recognize that many constraints may prevent students from participation, but we feel that the Student Activity Fund will prevent at least one financial obstacle. Every penny counts to assist our students, so thank you for the time and energy spent to support this project. We hope that we are able to continue to provide our youth with multiple positive extracurricular opportunities that will keep them engaged and enriched. Thank you, again, for thinking of Sitka High School and the future of our community. Go, Wolves!

Correction

A letter to the editor by Sigurd Rutter published Wednesday in the Sentinel contained a typographical error.

The penultimate paragraph should have read:

‘‘I am not asking for a taxi medallion or a limited entry permit. I’m 62 now. I’ll be long gone before taxi numbers reach a reasonable level. I’d just like to see a reasonable level of administration that would allow competition – and a reasonable chance for taxi drivers to earn enough that they don’t have to steal bread.’’

The Sentinel apologizes for the error.
