Escape Room Thanks
Dear Editor: The Escape Room event (an Escape Room is essentially where you’re in a situation where you need to solve clues/riddles in order to escape the room ... kind of along the lines of Mystery Theater) held for Sitka teens at UAS turned out to be a great success. Altogether, 96 students attended from Sitka High School, Pacific High School, Mt. Edgecumbe High School, the GED program, the Reach homeschool program. When they weren’t in the Escape Room, teens ate pizza, visited, and sang karaoke in the UAS lecture hall. (What impressive voices some of these students have!)
Many, many thanks to Gabriella Barile, who designed, planned and implemented the escape rooms; to Jeanette Farah for your outstanding interior design skills and organization of the event; to Will Ortiz for your willingness, time and effort. To Matthew Jackson and the Teen Center Committee for all of your excellent insight and dedication to this event; to AmeriCorps members Juan Cediel and Maija Nurmikko, and chef Nina Vizcarrondo, we really, really appreciated your being there; Kim Davis and the UAS Protection of Minors committee; other UAS staff, Crystal Duncan, Leah Mason, Nicole Rogers, Greg George, Chad Mulligan and Ian Waskey; to Pizza Express and the Coliseum Theater for your generous donations; Lloyd Platson for donating the karaoke machine; my son, Elliott, for your appreciated assistance and eagerness; and a final thank you to all of the teens for attending the event.
It took a lot of enthusiastic people to collaborate and make this happen and I hope that this can help fuel the fire for more to come for teens and youths here in Sitka; they definitely deserve the support.
