Pink Floyd Event
Dear Editor: Congratulations to the Sitka Fine Arts Camp for a thoroughly enjoyable production of Pink Floyd’s “Dark Side of the Moon.” The stageful of musicians, ranging from high school students to grandfathers, did an amazing job of bringing the album alive. I had a smile on my face the whole time.

JKT on Education Cuts
Dear Editor: Gov. Dunleavy’s proposed budget calls for a 25 percent cut to education funding. If passed, the Sitka School District predicts this will result in a loss of $3-4 million for local schools in addition to an unknown amount of city funding. This will trigger massive changes to the quality of education in Sitka.
Our economy will suffer, too, with potentially dozens of teachers losing their jobs and leaving town—taking with them vital economic contributions. There will be fewer residents to support local businesses, pay electric bills, and contribute to tax revenue. In Sitka, every family counts when it comes to keeping our economy strong.
Is there something you can do? Yes. Lawmakers have the final say on this budget and we have the power to influence their decisions. Start by attending a meeting with Rep. Jonathan Kreiss-Tomkins at 4 p.m. on Friday, Feb. 22, at the Sitka High School library. He will provide more details on the governor’s proposed budget and answer questions about how concerned citizens can best impact the final version. For more information, contact Ariel Starbuck at 623-7744 or email loveycole@yahoo.com.
The Alaska constitution mandates funding for public education. As Alaskans, we must remind lawmakers that fulfilling this mandate is not optional. Begin exercising your power on Friday.
