Book Challenge

Dear Editor: I am happy to announce that the first-ever Sitka Book Challenge, (Battle of the Books) for community members has been completed. We have a winner. The Jesuit Volunteers from team SeaHouse won and are to be congratulated.

That said, it was close, with team Old Harbor Books next, followed by Oldest Tricks in the Book and Read’em and Weep. The purpose was to help raise awareness and funds for the 100th anniversary of the Sitka Public Library occurring in March 2023.

Many activities are being planned for next year to celebrate, keep your eyes out for a survey about this event. Why? Libraries are the cornerstone of our communities. They are free and here to help everybody.

There are people to thank: Margot O’Connell from the library for her guidance and tech wizardry; Beau Hedrick, host/emcee extraordinaire; the scorers and time keepers, Paul Kraft, Melinda McAdams and John Stein; the Centennial Hall staff person Daniel; Kari Sagel, master planner and challenge judge, and there were challenges. The question writers were good and fair – thank you. Suzanne from the Soup, the Daily Sitka Sentinel, and KIFW and Raven Radio for their wonderful promotional help with this event. Thanks also to our small but enthusiastic masked audience.

If you like to read and want to try your memory at this, as the Terminator almost said, “We’ll be back.” Thank you.

Jeff Budd, Sitka
