School Board Appreciation
Dear Editor: Gov. Sean Parnell declared February as School Board Appreciation Month. I would encourage all community members to take the time to contact School Board members and thank them for their service.
In my 13 years as the superintendent of the Sitka School District I have been truly amazed at the dedication and love for our children and their education by all school board members. The board members have spent countless hours dealing with difficult issues without compensation other than the knowledge that their decisions are helping our children.
The education our children receive in Sitka is based upon policy that is developed by the School Board. Our strong, committed, local School Board is working extremely hard to keep education as a focus at the local, state and federal level. Please let your School Board members know how much you appreciate their hard work and dedication.
Steve Bradshaw, Superintendent
Sitka School District

White E Contribution
Dear Editor: The Sitka Babies and Books Committee would like to voice our appreciation to the White Elephant Shop for generously contributing to our organization. Because groups like the White Elephant Shop are committed to opportunities that enhance the lives of our Sitka children, our non-profit organization is better equipped to fulfill our mission.
We serve to encourage the children of Sitka to become lifelong readers by providing books, education and support to children and their parents in the first three years of a child’s life.
Once again, we would like to sincerely thank the White Elephant for their consistent support of our mission.

Your generous gifts were a pleasant surprise to an already joyous occasion for our family, and we have had a great time enjoying all of the terrific donations.

Elizabeth Peratrovich
Dear Editor: Sunday, Feb. 6, the ANS Camp 4 and the ANB Camp 1, along with the local community of Sitka, celebrated Elizabeth Peratrovich Day. Elizabeth Peratrovich was a tireless civil rights activist long before Martin Luther King. Her contribution and impassioned testimony before the territorial Senate committee was vital in passing the Anti-Discrimination Act of 1945. The day consisted of a parade down Lincoln Street, a dinner and celebration of her life, a play and a movie tribute at the Alaska Native Brotherhood founders Hall on Katlian Street. We so appreciate that people from all walks of life showed up to help us celebrate this very important day.
A day like this does not just happen by itself. The Alaska Native Sisterhood, Camp 4, would like to properly thank all those who made this day a warm wonderful success. The Alaska Native Brotherhood Camp 1, for their ceaseless work in the kitchen, cooking, chopping, and preparing a fine meal. Most notably Steve Warren for his homemade bread and delicious smoked salmon chowder. John and Sharyn Ferrick for their donation of the large floor-to-ceiling screen that the tribute to Elizabeth Peratrovich was shown on. Mayor Mim McConnell for her stirring speech. Betty Jo Moore, president of ANS, Camp 4, Tom Gamble, president of ANB, Camp 1. The Mt. Edgecumbe High School students for their annual performance and skit. The Tlingit and Haida Dancers. Father Michael Boyle of St. Michael’s Russian Orthodox Church for the blessing of the food. Paulette Moreno for being the master of ceremonies and also for her work on the beautiful centerpieces. We also would like to thank Silver Bay Seafoods and Baranof Island Housing Authority for their monetary donations.
To everyone involved, we give our heartfelt thanks and gratitude.
