Grant Generosity

Dear Editor: The Fireweed Dance Guild is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit responsible for the local production of The Nutcracker-An Alaskan Tale.

The board of directors would like to thank Sitka for the outpouring of support we received.

We would like to publicly acknowledge the generosity of the following grants: the Sitka White Elephant, Alaska Airlines, Hames Corporation, Alaskan Dream Cruises, Greater Sitka Legacy Fund, SEARHC, Sitka CHARR, Neurobehavioral Consultants, Harry Race, Sitka Couriers LLC, Dr. Don and Penny Lehmann and Sitka Rotary.

The number of volunteers working on our show is humbling, working on everything from costuming, props, rehearsals, front of the house and backstage assistance.

Finally, we thank Sitkans for attending our show. The audiences were amazing and the support shown to the performers was well received.

Landslides & Budgets

Dear Editor: The city has received a landslide risk map suggesting many homes in Sitka are in danger of being destroyed by landslides. Of course there is the risk that people in these houses, or even of people driving, playing or walking in these areas could be killed by a landslide. Cascade Creek, Gavan subdivision, Hillside subdivision, Jamestown Bay, Benchlands, etc., all appear to be in landslide risk areas.

I know that working on how to raise taxes, rates and fees to meet the latest budget shortfalls is important but I feel the Assembly should be explaining how they are going to cope with the landslide risks we are faced with.

Should the city lower the assessed values of the homes that might be at risk of being destroyed?

Will landlords be allowed to rent houses and apartments in landslide risk areas?

Could homeowners lose their insurance coverage?

Might the city block off streets and roads to through traffic in these landslide risk areas during heavy rains?

Would the city abandon and close streets in landslide risk areas?

Will the Assembly seek state and federal dollars to develop city land people can relocate to out of these landslide risk areas?
