Fish to Schools Lunch
Dear Editor: On March 4, Sitka Conservation Society partnered with Kéet Gooshí Héen Elementary School to host the Fish to Schools “We Love Our Fishermen” Lunch. It was a wonderful celebration of local fisherpeople, healthy oceans, healthy fish, local processors, school chefs and, of course, local kids!
Fishermen and representatives from Sitka Sound Seafoods, the Seafood Producers Cooperative, and Shee Atika Inc. (a large donor to the program this year) were invited to share a fish lunch with kids and enjoy fish-themed conversation. Out on the playground, kids played fishing games, identified fish and took Polaroid photos posing with fishing gear. We hope some of them may have been envisioning their future career in the fishing industry.
Big thank you to Kéet Gooshí Héen for their generous hospitality, to the teachers who facilitated the creation of beautiful thank you posters, and to the Sitka School District Food Services team, who made rockfish tacos for everyone to enjoy. And our continuous gratitude to the local boats who make Fish to Schools possible by sharing their hard earned catch. We appreciate you!
