Gassman Leads BBSC at Junior Olympics

Sitka’s Emma Gassman, 14, earned the 1st High Point award for age 13-14 girls at the 2019 Alaska Swimming Junior Olympic Championship swim meet at Bartlett High School in Anchorage over the weekend, helping the Baranof Barracuda Swim Club place 7th out of 22 teams competing.

BBSC also earned the Highest Point Per Swimmer award and the Highest Percentage of Best Times per team.

BBSC swimmers went 71% best times.

Gassman competed in the biggest age group of swimmers. She placed first in the 200 free (2:01.06), first in the 1000 free (11:24.13), first in the 1650 (18:48.46), first in the 200 fly (2:19.05), second in the 100 fly (1:02.42), third in the 200 back (2:15.97), fifth in the 400 IM (5:01.58), and seventh in the 100 back (1:04.63).

Zach Martens, 9, swam in the boys 10 & under bracket and finished second in the 500 free (6:58.54), second in the 100 breast (1:35.34), third in the 50 breast (43.55), fourth in the 100 fly (1:33.94), fourth in the 200 IM (2:59.76), fifth in the 100 back (1:27.09), and seventh in the 100 IM (1:28.28).

Rhett Walker, 9, competed in the boys 10 and under division, placing third in the 100 breast (1:36.02), fourth in the 50 breast (45.79), fifth in the 500 free (7:23.45), fifth in the 200 IM (3:03.19), sixth in the 200 free (2:45.30), seventh in the 100 free (1:15.00), and ninth in the 50 free (34.82).

Sadie Saline, 10, swam in the girls 10 & under division and placed third in the 50 back (36.99), third in the 100 breast (1:32.38), fourth in the 100 back (1:23.84), fifth in the 50 free (32.81), fifth in the 100 free (1:12.77), sixth in the 200 IM (3:02.99), and eighth in the 100 IM (1:24.86). 

Razie Guillory, 14, swam in the girls 13-14 age division, finishing fourth in the 200 fly (2:26.84), sixth in the 100 fly (1:04.87), seventh in the 200 free (2:06.25), eighth in the 100 free (58.82), eighth in the 400 IM (5:08.81), 15th in the 50 free (27.24) and 15th in the 200 IM (2:30.19).

Matt Rice, 14, swam in the boys 13-14 division and placed second in the 200 free (1:51.89), second in the 1000 free (10:45.29), second in the 1650 free (17:49.14), third in the 100 free (52.55), fifth in the 500 free (5:19.18), and seventh in the 100 back (1:02.09), and 13th in the 50 free (25.24). Rice was also named to the Alaska All Star Team for Western Zones.

Sam Jones, 14, swam in the boys 13-14 age group and placed fourth in the 1000 free (11:25.01), seventh in the 1650 free (18:48.26), 10th in the 500 free (5:33.99), 15th in the 200 IM (2:26.01), 18th in the 100 free (57.34), and 31st in the 50 free (27.22).

Tytan Frawley, 15, swam in the 15 & over boys division and placed 12th in the 400 IM (4:39.86), 14th in the 500 free (5:04.17), 15th in the 200 free (1:53.60), 22nd in the 50 free (23.51), 23rd in the 100 free (51.22), 26th in the 100 fly (59.29), and 29th in the 100 back (1:01.58).

 

Sophia Schwantes, 16, competed in the girls 15 and over division, placing sixth in the 100 fly (1:02.24), seventh in the 200 breast (2:36.77), eighth in the 100 breast (1:11.61), 9th in the 400 IM (5:09.52), 14th in the 200 IM (2:24.18), 16th in the 50 free (26.71), and 20th in the 100 free (58.34).
