Dear Editor: Trump’s unprecedented attempt to centralize power over American life has been the defining characteristic of his second term. In Sitka, we don’t sit quietly while our rights are stripped away—we make Good Trouble.
On Thursday, nearly 70 Sitkans, one cruise ship passenger, and a very cute boxer puppy joined communities around the country for the “Good Trouble Lives On” national day of action to protest attacks on civil and human rights by the Trump administration. The phrase “Good Trouble” is the legacy of civil rights leader and congressman John Lewis, who passed away five years ago this month.
Organized by Sitkans for Peace and Democracy, protesters displayed signs denouncing 18 unconstitutional and impeachable offenses of the Trump administration:
1. Unconstitutionally usurping Congress’s power to declare war
2. Unlawful mobilization of military forces against civilian protesters in the United States
3. Illegal kidnapping, detention, and removal of U.S. residents
4. Illegal and unconstitutional removal of U.S. residents, migrants, and asylum-seekers to foreign prisons
5. Unlawfully and unconstitutionally attempting to deport immigrants for peacefully protesting
6. Unconstitutionally usurping Congress’s powers
7. Defying court orders and unconstitutionally usurping judicial authority
8. Abusing his power to seek retribution against perceived adversaries
9. Co-opting and dismantling independent government oversight
10. Unlawful imposition of tariffs
11. Receiving foreign and domestic emoluments
12. Unconstitutionally usurping local and state authority
13. Abusing the emergency power
14. Abusing the presidential pardon power
15. Depriving citizens of their birthright citizenship
16. Blocking efforts to secure U.S. elections
17. Planning the forced removal of Palestinians from Gaza
18. Engaging in unlawful, corrupt practices during the 2024 presidential campaign
Sitkans for Peace and Democracy make Good Trouble every Saturday, noon-1 p.m., at the roundabout. All who share concerns about the unconstitutional and unlawful actions of the Trump administration are invited to participate in the weekly protest.
