Gratitude

Posted

Dear Editor: The holiday season is a time for reflection and gratitude, and at Sitka High School we have much to be thankful for. November was filled with meaningful moments that strengthened our sense of community and inspired our students.

On Veterans Day, Commander Vince Winter and Captain Brian McLaughlin spoke to our student body.

Commander Winter shared the history of Tlingit Code Talkers and their vital contributions during World War II, as well as the story of Private Robert Johnstone, the first Sitkan to enlist in the Marine Corps, who gave his life at the Battle of Guam while saving others.

Captain McLaughlin spoke about the power of collaboration and servant leadership, reminding us that while these qualities define the Armed Forces, they are equally important in all aspects of society. Their words were inspiring, and we thank them – and all U.S. veterans – for their service.

We also extend our gratitude to Pvt. Colton Ewers, an active-duty Marine and SHS alumnus, for taking time from his schedule to join a Zoom call with students. His willingness to answer questions and share his experiences was invaluable.

In recognition of Native American Heritage Month, we were honored to welcome David Kanosh Yooḵis’kooḵéik, a respected storyteller and SHS graduate, who spoke about the growth he has witnessed in cultural integration within our schools over the past thirty years. His insights into how these changes have shaped relationships were both powerful and affirming.

We are also grateful to Sitka’s chapter of Delta Kappa Gamma, the honorary society of women educators, for recognizing our staff during American Education Week with delicious treats. It is wonderful to be remembered by those who have done the same job in the past, and who have done it so well.

Finally, we thank the families of Sitka for entrusting us with your children. Our 320 students represent a rich diversity of cultures, talents, and aspirations, and working with them is a privilege we never take for granted. From all of us at Sitka High School, thank you for making November a month of learning, gratitude, and community.
