Hamilton Cyril Cook

Services for former Sitkan Hamilton “Hammy” Cyril Cook will be held 3 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 28, at Daybreak Star Indian Cultural Center in Seattle.

Hamilton died Jan. 22, 2016, in Kasilof. He was 63.

He was born April 20, 1952, in Sitka, the fifth child of Flora R. (Jacobs) and Donald A. Cook Sr. He was a Tlingit from the Diesheetaan, Needlefish House of Angoon.  He was a member of Shee Atika Inc. and Sealaska Corporation.

Hamilton graduated from Sitka High School and went on to attend UAS in Juneau and a Marine training school in Seattle.

He enjoyed the life of a seaman, fishing Southeast Alaska and Washington waters.  His first training as a fisherman was on the Floretta skippered by his dad, and then on many other boats in Southeast Alaska including the North Star out of Seattle.

He had moved to Kasilof from Seattle about eight years ago.

Hamilton’s survivors include his son Daniel Anthony Cook, his partner, Serena, of Sisseton, S.D., and his children Jamie, Kendra, John, Marissa and Kiara.

Also surviving are his sister, LaVerne Cook-Wise and husband Roger of Seattle; niece Jessica Brown and husband Archie, Seattle; nephew Jedidiah Dominy and his children, Justice, Savannah and Mahala, Seattle; and nephew Justin, his wife Chantelle and children Winterstar, Anthony, Issacc, Jacob and Justin Jr., Seattle.

Hamilton was preceded in death by his parents and three of his siblings,  Floretta (Petty) Kainulainen, Sitka; Eileen Jeanette (Jeanie) Franier of Peever, S.D.; and Donald A. Cook Jr. of Seattle.

Other surviving relatives include aunts and uncles Ernest and Lillian Hillman of Juneau, Oliver George and Laurie Hillman of Shoreline, Wash.,  Nina Estus of Washington state, Gennivive Cook of Hoonah.

His cousins include Bertha and Pete Karras of Sitka; Harold and John Jacobs of Juneau; Tony Jacobs of Gresham, Ore.; and Norma and Hillary Balancier of Slidell, La.

Many nieces and nephews also survive.
