HERRING BLESSING - Tammy Young pours sea water onto the Herring Rock during a blessing ceremony outside the Sheet'ka Kwaan Naa Kahidi Sunday afternoon. Scores of Sitkans turned out for a program that celebrates the return of spawning herring to Sitka Sound. The Herring Rock was originally located in nearby Sitka Channel where a Tlingit legend involves herring spawning on the hair of a woman sleeping on the rock. The rock was blasted apart to build the Sheffield Hotel on the site in the 1980s.
