Dear Editor: Sitka needs more housing! That’s a fact. What to do?
An opportunity awaits us. SEARHC has moved into a grand new facility. What to do with the older building?
I am proposing that SITKA- the community, ask SEARHC to donate or sell at a decent price the former hospital to the city of Sitka.
Some thoughts (readers surely have better ideas):
Make it available to private contracter with stipulation that it be available only for housing
Set up a private or public entity to provide more housing.
Conduct meeting and ask opinions of Sitkans how we could provide more affordable housing with this building.
DO SOMETHING!
Yes, I know about asbestos, about complications, etc. I have worked construction. Solutions are possible. This is NOT complicated. It is an opportunity. Do something! The City of Sitka sold the Community Hospital to SEARHC at a bargain price. That is clear. It’s time for SEARHC to do all of us a return favor. Sell the city the former SEARHC Hospital Complex for a reduced rate.
Be bold. Time for the powers that be – Borough Assembly and SEARHC to meet. Don’t let this opportunity slide by. Nope! I don’t have all the answers; however, even if that old building is gutted – it’s usable. Keep in mind how much it would cost to build a structure that size. C’mon Sitka. Opportunity awaits!
