Appreciation
Dear Editor: On behalf of the staff and board of Sitkans Against Family Violence, I would like to express our gratitude to all the businesses and individuals who contributed to making SAFV’s holiday season a success.
For their delicious food donations, we would like to thank Pizza Express, Hames Corporation and Sea Mart Quality Foods, Highliner Coffee, and AC Lakeside. In addition, we would like to extend a thank you for the anonymous donations of our Christmas tree and various holiday foods.
We greatly appreciate the presents from all who generously donated to and organized the United Methodist Church Giving Tree! We’d like to thank White’s Pharmacy/Harry Race, The Cellar, Sitka High School, The Nugget, and Sitka True Value for the gifts, gift cards, wrapping paper, and decorations.
Without the generosity of the Sitka businesses and individuals in the community, we would not have had so many wonderful presents to distribute to families for their holiday season.
Finally, we would like to extend a thank you to all of our volunteers and SAFV staff members who helped make the holiday season a safe and celebratory time.
Thank you, Sitka, for your incredible generosity this holiday season. So much joy has been expressed from all of our residents, clients and staff created by your support.

AmeriCorps
Dear Editor: It is the start of a new AmeriCorps year for me as I take on a second contract, this year with Sitka Counseling! All of the new things I’m learning are both hectic and empowering as I begin my journey into learning how to do prevention work with the Sitka Counseling prevention team! This month I’ll be mostly focusing on figuring out which projects to take on and about how prevention works; focusing on youth outreach, community engagement, and opening up conversations around substance abuse.
This weekend we will be doing a Saturday screening of “Pursuit of Happyness” on the big screen at 10:30 a.m. at the Coliseum Theater and I hope that so many people can come and join us to support a nice chilly winter day movie! I am super excited for this film as it portrays the struggle of being a single parent in a world that seems to be set up to work against you! As I start to learn about all of the ways I can help our Sitka community in supporting our youth, our community partners, and our community as a whole through prevention, I hope that this can lead me to finding ways to change our world to be one that is more supportive, open-minded, open-hearted, and empowering! Unity and kindness,
Anastasia Stefanowicz, Sitka
