Congratulations, Sea Mart
Dear Editor: I want to let our community know that Sea Mart in Sitka has been awarded the Small Business of the Year award by the Governor’s State Vocational Rehabilitation Committee. The committee honors small and large businesses in Alaska that make a notable effort to employ people with disabilities.
The Large Business of the Year award went to Fred Meyer in Juneau. The awards program is conducted by the committee’s Business Recognition subcommittee, in partnership with the Alaska Department of Labor and Workforce Development, Division of Vocational Rehabilitation.
Both business awards were announced at the Society for Human Resource Managers conference in Anchorage. The Small Business Award will be presented on Jan. 3 to Sea Mart. The award presentation will occur at the weekly Chamber of Commerce luncheon at Westmark Sitka.

‘The Nutcracker’
Dear Sitka:As the director of ‘‘The Nutcracker,’’ I want to thank everyone who helped with the production and everyone who came out to watch their friends and family onstage. I truly feel like this is a citywide effort and I thought this was one of our best performances ever. It’s very gratifying for me to see all of us come together and find a shared vision that we can put onstage.
I’d like to thank all the performers for coming to every rehearsal – even when they were tired. I’d like to thank their families for supporting them at home. I’d like to thank the school-teachers who dealt with tired kiddos the week of the show. I’d like to thank every single volunteer – no job is too small to be mentioned. We couldn’t do this without all of us pitching in together.
Thanks to local media who helped us get the word out – The Daily Sitka Sentinel, KIFW, Raven Radio, Ellen Frankenstein, and the Capitol City Weekly.
Thanks to local organizations for financial support – SEARHC, Sitka Rotary, Alaska Airlines, Hames Incorporated, Alaskan Dream Cruises, Neurobehavioral Consultants, CHARR, Greater Sitka Legacy Fund, White E, and Harry Race Pharmacy. And individual support: Jeff Budd, Shannon Haugland, Alene Henning, Don and Penny Lehmann. Many thanks to Old Harbor Books for selling tickets – it turned out to be a big job and we couldn’t have done it ourselves.
Finally, I’d like to thank Fireweed Dance Guild for producing ‘‘The Nutcracker.’’ I feel very fortunate to be your director. Thank you for believing in me and supporting the cast and crew.

Sitka Kitch
Dear Editor:As we enter a new year, the advisory team for the Sitka Kitch community rental commercial kitchen wants to thank everybody who has supported our program over the past couple of years.
The Sitka Kitch opened in 2015, with the mission to cultivate, incubate and educate. Since we opened in March 2015, we have hosted 49 cooking and food preservation classes attended by 378 students. We also have had three businesses rent the Sitka Kitch for 1,578 hours as they processed food for their consumers. There also were five organizations that rented the Sitka Kitch to host a variety of private events.
In addition, the Sitka Kitch wants to thank the businesses, organizations and volunteers who have kept us going over the past three years, including the First Presbyterian Church, Sitka Conservation Society, University of Alaska Fairbanks Cooperative Extension Service, Simple Pleasures, Sitka Community Hospital, SouthEast Alaska Regional Health Consortium, Sitka Kitch Advisory Team, Sitka Kitch instructors, and Sitka Kitch class volunteers. We couldn’t have done it without your support.

Thankful
Dear Editor: Hi, SEARHC, Hair Loft.
I am thankful – what a year!
On Jan. 4, 2017, I had an umbrella patch done in Kansas City, Mo., St. Lukes. Successful.
On Dec. 27, 2017, at Providence Alaska Medical Center Cardiovascular Surgery Center, an ablation was done. Also successful.
Thank you to everyone at SEARHC who showed their concern for me. ‘‘We are here for you,’’ ‘‘Anything you need,’’ hugs and well-wishes. Frankie, thank you is hardly enough. Our friend Shelley is a doll. I think about everyone at work a lot. I am at the right place at the right time. Thank you, Vanna and Rosemary!
Happy New Year! Always grateful.

St. Michael’s Donation
Dear Editor: I understand the city’s decision not to contribute to the repair of St. Michael’s. I’m disappointed, but I understand.
Those of you who were here, as I was, at the time of the downtown fire would either have fought the fire or had a family member who did. Also remembered would be how Sitka came together to contribute to the rebuilding of St. Michael’s. With those things in mind, as well as those who attend St. Michael’s, I have made a contribution to its repair and hope that others will do the same.
Alice Wolcott, Sitka
