SHS DDF Fundraising
Dear Editor: As one of the coaches of Sitka High School’s drama, debate and forensics team, I wanted to thank all of you for the support that you provide Sitka kids in their academics and activities. I’m deeply proud to belong to a community that so generously reaches out, whether it be by attending performances and sporting events, or by buying a treat at one of the many bake sale fundraisers.
As you may have seen in the papers this fall, the SHS DDF team has had a fantastic season this year. The team is in the middle of arduously polishing their pieces and debate plans in order to prepare for the annual DDF state competition in Anchorage over Feb. 13-15. It takes a lot of work, and a lot of fundraising to get 15 kids to Anchorage. If you’re interested, there are a couple ways that you could help!
On Jan. 31, at 7 p.m., we will be holding an event at the SHS Performing Arts Center. At this event we’ll be performing our state pieces, as well as having a silent auction featuring donated items from local artists and businesses. Again, this fundraiser only works if we can get as many people to the event as possible, so spread the word! All proceeds and donations will help fund state travel.
We have also started an IndieGoGo Campaign. On this website, anybody can choose to donate to our cause online. If you haven’t been able to make it to one of our other fundraising events, this website is an easy way to throw a few dollars our way or to spread the word to friends and family. Just go to indiegogo.com and search for “Sitka DDF.”
Thank you again for all your support! We’d love to see you in the audience next weekend. There may be some other fundraisers in the next few weeks, too, so keep your eyes out for SHS DDF.

Sitka’s Medical Care
Dear Editor: I was truly impressed and deeply moved by the professionalism of the people who cared for me during a recent Medevac.
To the physicians and nurses who cared for me in the hospital, the fire and paramedic personnel, and the flight nurses and pilot who took me quickly and safely to Seattle - I thank you from the bottom of my heart.
To my colleagues who cared for my granddaughter so that my husband could accompany me, and the fire and rescue personnel who so kindly offered to take care of anything that needed to be done at our home – I am humbly grateful to be the recipient of such goodness.
I do not know the names of all who were a part of this experience – I wish I did, for I would like to acknowledge each of you personally.
To all those with whom I work who came to offer support and good wishes – they were truly appreciated and I took those wishes with me on my journey.
Having gone through this experience, I am reminded yet again of why living and working in Sitka is such a privilege. With gratitude,
Jeanette Berry, Sitka
