Basketball Invitational
Dear Editor: I would like to thank all who supported the 18th Annual Mt. Edgecumbe Invitational Basketball Tournament last week. Twenty-four teams from around Alaska and locally participated in the four-day event. We had a great number of fans, parents and 55 games played. All of the proceeds from the tournament go directly back to MEHS student-activities.
Thank you to our local sponsors: Sitka Cruise Terminal, Allen Marine, Schmolck Mechanical, Westmark, Aspen, Sitka Bottling, Ernie’s, SEARHC, Sitka CHARR, Subway, Hard Rock Construction and Sitka Referees Association.
Thank you, also, to all of our volunteers: Linda Blankenship, Rose Demmert, Kathy-Hope Erickson, Chuck Haskins, Terry Friske, Rich McAlpin, Gary Klushkan, Tony Haskins, Kenyatta Bradley, Matt Love, Charlene Peterson and Gene Bartaloba for volunteering many hours on and off the court. Thank you, also, to the MEHS students and coaches that worked extra-long hours to help produce a great event.
Again, thank you for supporting MEHS and our students!
Andrew Friske, MEHS
Residential/Activities Principal

Farewell to Kathryn
Dear Editor: It is with mixed emotions that we announce the departure of Kathryn Winslow, the program director at Brave Heart Volunteers. For the past four and a half years, Kathryn has given her heart and soul to BHV, she has made a tremendous impact on our mission to provide compassion, respite, and education to those experiencing loneliness, grief, and end of life.
While Kathryn’s formal title may be program director, she has truly been our “matchmaker.” With grace, empathy, and unparalleled skill, she has connected volunteers with people in need, ensuring that each match was not just a service, but a meaningful relationship built on understanding, trust, and care. Kathryn has always focused on the goal of easing the burdens of those experiencing some of life’s most challenging moments.
We wish her all the best in her future endeavors and know that the work she has done will continue to resonate within this community for years to come. Thank you, Kathryn, for everything. You will always be a cherished part of  Brave Heart Volunteers.
This Wednesday from noon to 1 p.m. BHV is hosting a volunteer lunch. If you are available, please stop by and wish Kathryn the best.
