Public Bike Shed
Dear Editor: On Tuesday, a new, public bike shed now placed adjacent the Sitka Sound Science Center, the Sheldon Jackson Campus, and the tennis court, was officially dedicated to Sitka. I hope that the community finds it useful.
I also hope that people will, when they see the building, consider the potential for our regional forest to generate timber, particularly second-growth timber. This focus on young-growth is a key component of the USFS Transition Framework as we move away from old growth logging and toward a sustainable timber industry.
Though there are formidable financial barriers to its harvest, there is a great deal of wood which really needs to come out of the forest, for its own health. Much of the logged Tongass is now overgrown with stands of small timber too thick for a healthy forest. Thinning this, and extracting it for construction material and for heating, would be good for the forest and for the local economy.
