A New Year
Dear Editor: Hurray! Finally! 2019!!
Sitting. Thinking. What do I really like about Sitka? How might I be a part of what I really like about Sitka?
I really don’t know.
As an older citizen, I am a “problem.” A statistic. Pretty soon the “Silver Tsunami” will be 20 percent of the population. Then we will really be a “problem.” Our statistics, gathered by others, will be used for funding. Government funding at many levels, multiple sources. Grants, services, planning, housing, roads. Funding. Hiring. Questionnaires. Studies. Evaluations. Analysis. Funding.
Oh, we old folks can be a powerful economic, driving force in this city. Just by being “old.” Or “Vintage,” as I prefer to be called. We are the receivers of lots of good things. Good care. Fine transportation. Gifts of discounts. Tax-free cards. Lots of city services. Quality water. Police and fire protection. Assistance, if we ask, on just about anything from crossing streets to receiving cheerful, kind offers of help from young volunteers who need experience on their resumes.
But I’m wondering, what can we Vintage Folk do to help identify, validate, strengthen, participate, contribute to this truly wonderful town?
I really don’t know. Just sitting. Thinking.
Warm, best wishes to all Sitkans. 2019! Yay!
