Correction

Dear Editor: The name of the caroler

singing ‘‘Silent Night’’ in German at

the Sitka Community Christmas dinner

was incorrectly listed in Friday’s letter

to the editor. The singer should have

been identified as Ramona Kirkman,

who did a wonderful job!

New Year’s Baby

Dear Editor: I couldn’t help but notice

the error in Friday’s paper on page one

under New Year’s Baby. “Dr. Charles

Roesel delivered the baby.”

That’s just silly, and quite simply

impossible. By definition, Caroline

Lassus is the only person who could

have delivered baby Ilani.

Dr. Charles Roesel may have assisted

with the delivery, but I can assure

you that the mother did the primary

work. Although I don’t know

any details about this particular birth,

even in the case of a Caesarean section

the mother is the only person who can

deliver a baby. That’s why they call it

labor and delivery.

Dr. Roesel is an excellent doctor; I

imagine that the entire Lassus family

was grateful for his help.

Congratulations to the Lassus family

and welcome to Sitka, baby Ilani.

You are beautiful.

Well done, everyone! It takes a team

to bring a baby into the world, but it is

the mother who delivers.

Karen Zamzow, D.C., Sitka

Card of Thanks

Dear Editor: The Roth family wishes

to thank Sitkans who prayed for us,

hugged us, and visited during Ruth’s

last six months of life and after her

death.

On Dec. 29 we gathered to celebrate

Ruth’s life and the role model she was

for each of us.

The time of story sharing was especially

meaningful. The memory of

being gathered in community, relaxed

and remembering our Ruth stories,

continues to encourage us.

It was wonderful to worship in Sitka’s

First Presbyterian Church sanctuary

one more time.

Reporting

Dear Editor: I am long overdue to

thank Shannon Haugland for her excellent

news reporting.

Over the past 20 years Shannon has

interviewed me numerous times on numerous

topics and in every instance her

reporting was accurate and fair.

One of my best friends from college

was City Editor for the Anchorage

Daily News for many years.

He once told me that the hardest

thing to teach young reporters was that

they do not make the news, they report

it.

Young aspiring journalists would be

well served to watch Shannon as she

excels at her profession.
