Climate Resilience
Dear Editor: As a new year begins, how are Southeast Alaskans preparing for climate change? Find out in the final episode of the locally-produced SeaBank Chronicles podcast, featuring the voices of 14 citizens from six Southeast communities including Sitka, Petersburg, Juneau, Craig, Thorne Bay, and Kasaan. With climate-related events still fresh in mind—2024 saw glacial outburst floods in Juneau, landslides in Ketchikan, and parched salmon streams on Prince of Wales Island—local residents are tackling changes in our lands and waters head on. Hear your friends and neighbors voice their strategies in the SeaBank Chronicle’s seventh episode, Seeking Shelter, available on all podcast platforms and at the Alaska Sustainable Fisheries Trust website.
Later this winter, another group of Sitkans will appear in the Coastal Climate Radio Series, produced by the Alaska Ocean Observing System in partnership with NOAA Fisheries, to discuss how Gulf of Alaska fishing communities are adapting to changes in the marine environment. This series is scheduled to air on KCAW in the coming weeks.
At the Alaska Sustainable Fisheries Trust, our work for Southeast fisheries is made possible with generous contributions from many local individuals, organizations, and businesses. We sincerely appreciate the latest round of support from Shaffer and Company and the Hames Corporation.
For information on how you can join fellow Southeast Alaskans in becoming climate resilient, please visit www.thealaskatrust.org where the final episode of the SeaBank Chronicles Season 1 is now available along with information on adaptation planning for the fisheries that sustain our food system, culture, and local economies.
