Judith I. Ozment Dies; Former Sitka Was 90

Judith Inez Ozment, a former Sitka resident, passed away at an assisted living facility in Catonsville, Maryland, on November 27, 2021. She was predeceased by her husband, Jack, who suffered a stroke in November 2019.  

Judy was born in Fillmore, Indiana, on Dec. 11, 1931. Both she and Jack were raised in Indiana and were married in 1950. They lived and raised their family in New York, New Jersey and Virginia, where Judy attended Northern Virginia Community College.Judy worked as a librarian and Jack as an engineer for IBM.

They came to Sitka in 1991 to serve as Volunteers in Mission at Sheldon Jackson College, and spent nearly two decades here, being active in the community in many areas. They were members of the Sitka Conservation Society and other civic organizations ñ including Sitka Trail Works, the Historic Preservation Commission and Sitka Historical Society ñ and helped to preserve the Sheldon Jackson College campus.

They also were members of the First Presbyterian Church. 

The Ozments are survived by their three children, Jay Ozment, of Fayetteville, North Carolina; Jon Ozment, of Washington, D.C.; and Jana Ozment, of Hillsboro, Virginia; eight grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

A memorial is planned for later this year in Sitka.
