Sidewalk Shapes
Dear Editor: I found the following ‘‘note’’ at the crosswalk by the previous Bear Country Gifts shop, and I thought it deserves response.
‘‘Dear Sitka: Why is it that you have sidewalks shaped like meat? Everywhere I go, I see rib bones and steaks. It confuses me. Joe.’’
I think he refers to the Native design ovoids in the pathways of the harbor walk.

Family Fun Dance
Dear Editor: On Friday, July 12, the Alaska Native Sisterhood sponsored its annual July 4 dance fundraiser. Our Family Fun Dance was a wonderful success. Ages from 3 to 89 came out to enjoy our patriotic tribute to Independence Day. All proceeds will go towards their trip to Grand Camp in Petersburg in October.
Entire families could be seen dancing together throughout the night. But our success didn’t just happen. Many people contributed to this happy event. We would like to thank the following for their continued support: Roger Hames and Sea Mart for their beautifully decorated cake and cupcakes and bottled water. Trish and Dirk White of Harry Race Pharmacy for their awesome gift bag of electronics and stuffed animals for the kiddos and teens. Harris Air for donating a 45-minute flight-seeing trip. The Channel Club for donating a $50 gift certificate. The Westmark Sitka for donating a $50 gift certificate. A special thank you to Duane and Tracy Lambeth for donating an awesome grand prize of an $1,800 stay at Dove Island Lodge for two which includes a seven-course dinner and a boat ride to and from Crescent Harbor. Please remember these merchantS when you are out on the town.
We would also like to thank many people who worked hard and donated their time to make this event a success. Chef Alan Bird of Alaska Today for his July 4 menu. John and Sharon Ferrick for their elegant appointments, red, white and blue presidential bunting that hung along the balcony, and their lighting and awesome dance music. Will Hanbury for being the evening’s premier entertainer. Will donated his time in the name of his mother, Sara Hanbury, a lifetime member of ANS.  Lanie Spotted Bird for her beautiful balloon sculptors that framed both sides and the front of the stage. Harriet Beleal, Paulette Moreno, Jean Arnold, Betty Jo Moore and DJ Brincefield for their hard work on the prep and setup.
And last, but not least, thank you, Sitka, for coming out and making our event a special one. It’s truly a great privilege to live in such a beautiful place with people who have such a commitment to the community spirit.
Debe K. Brincefield,
Dance Chairperson,

Knitted Surprise
Dear Editor: This morning I saw a new knitted surprise downtown. I am very glad this person came to our community and is expressing herself with these little surprises for all of us to enjoy.
I do not know if the flowers I saw tied to the lights at the Fire Hall were new or just new to me, but  hope she did not let a person who showed a complete lack of judgment and respect by damaging her other knitted surprises stop her from adding more color and vibrancy to our community.
I wanted to thank her and let her know I appreciate her every time I see eyeballs peeking out of the shrubbery, flowers hanging from lights –  or my favorite – the cannon warmer!
