Community Dance
Dear Editor: The Alaska Native Sisterhood Camp 4 and the Alaska Native Brotherhood Camp 1 would like to thank everyone involved in making our 2013 July 4th Community Dance fundraiser a success. All proceeds from the dance will go towards the kitchen remodel of the Alaska Native Brotherhood’s Founders Hall.
Our family fun dance was a rip roaring success. All ages were represented and a good time was had by all until late into the evening. We are very excited and looking at making this an annual event along with other dance fundraisers during the year to promote the spirit of brotherhood and sisterhood.
Our Community July 4th Dance fundraiser was made possible by so many of the wonderful people and merchants here in Sitka. We would like to extend a special thank you for your generosity of heart and spirit to: Harry Race Pharmacy, Harris Air, the Channel Club, The Fly In Fish Inn, the Asian Palace, Agave, Sitka Bazaar, Homer Mills and Dove Island Lodge for an awesome grand prize. Also thanks go to: Sea Mart Quality Foods, Aurora Business Supplies, Larry Scneider and Danny B. of KIFW for their coverage and promotion of the dance. Sincere appreciation goes to John and Sharyn Ferrick for awesome sound and light design and Will Hanbury for a fine evening of entertainment. These fine people donated their time and efforts and we are very grateful to them.
There were many volunteers that made the evening a success. Betty Jo Moore, Steve Warren, The Latterday Saints Missionaries, Marie Guthrie, Lisa Kilgore, Dan Svetlack, DJ Brincefield, Kelly Wicks and many more helpers that stopped in and spontaneously put their hands to work. Thank you to Paulette Moreno, acting president of the Alaska Native Sisterhood Camp 4 and Andrew Roberts of the Alaska Native Brotherhood Camp 1 for your hard work, sacrifice and focused drive.
The Alaska Native Brotherhood and Sisterhood is a Christian organization that strives to promote our Native culture and heritage, and give back to the community.
    Thank you again to everyone.

Cancer Support
Dear Editor: Cancer is one of the most common fatal diseases. In our island community of 9,000, it’s hard to find a person not affected by it. There are things going on to support people with cancer.
The recent event “Relay for Life” raised money for cancer research. Carol Odess is running a fly fishing class for breast cancer survivors next Sunday from 10 a.m.-2 p.m. (contact number 205-515-3669). The Sitka Cancer Survivor’s Society has raised money for grants given to people going through cancer. Sitka is good at giving people with cancer hope.
Support for cancer patients is a way of improving their quality of life. Support groups allow cancer patients to offer each other helpful advice and tips on how to get through challenges such as chemotherapy. They also tell their personal stories, ask questions, and share the emotions of this often difficult period. There is a cancer support group in Sitka that meets at the manager’s house of the Pioneer Home every third Sunday of the month at 1 p.m. Please come join us. For more information, call me at 623-0842.
