Park in Limbo
Dear Editor: Sitka State Parks System is still in ‘‘limbo,’’ with no Sitka staff. The Sitka State Parks Citizens Advisory Board has continued to support Sitka’s State Parks and keep them accessible for public use. The board was recently successful in renaming the State Parks Forest and Muskeg Trail for former State Rep. Ben Grussendorf, who was extremely instrumental in securing funding to build the trail and other State Parks facilities in Sitka.
The Sitka State Parks Board wants to thank Tisher Construction for contributing gravel, equipment and labor, and also Birch Equipment for repairing the Ben Grussendorf Forest and Muskeg Trail. We also thank the U.S. Forest Service for signs and general assistance; the National Park Service for maintenance of the State Parks Castle Hill and Old Sitka Historical Site facilities; and Dorothy (Brownie) Thomsen, John McCrehin and numerous other volunteers who have kept Sitka’s State Parks usable – especially the Halibut Point Recreation Area. Sitka Trail Works is also thanked for obtaining grants for specific trails in the Sitka area for maintenance and upgrades.
Thanks, again, to all for persevering in keeping Sitka State Parks enjoyable to use.
Marjorie L. Ward, Chair,
