Landscape Day

Dear Editor: On behalf of the City and Borough of Sitka Parks and Recreation staff, I would like to extend appreciation to the Tree and Landscape Committee members for coordinating a volunteer landscape maintenance day at Baranof Elementary School on June 20.

In four hours with concerted volunteer efforts, the two big landscape beds at Baranof School building were revitalized and transformed! Volunteers weeded the beds and then amended the ‘‘tired’’ soil with fresh compost.  Overgrown bushes were pruned, perennial plants were divided and re-planted and new plants were added. Volunteers also brought additional plant donations. I am grateful for the substantial labor provided by Joe D’Arienzo, Chris Gale, Lisa Moore, Cora and Bob Nisbet and Deb Miller and for the plant-shares that Michelle Putz donated to the event.

Thank you, Tree and Landscape Committee members, for all your efforts to beautify and maintain the city’s many parks and building grounds.

Lynne Brandon,

City and Borough of Sitka,

Parks and Recreation Manager
