Survival Camp
Dear Editor: Last week we concluded the second annual Outdoor Survival Camp, co-hosted by AMSEA and SCS. During the week-long camp students explored a variety of marine safety topics including PFDs, immersion suits, survival kits, firefighting, shelter building, maydays, anchoring, wild edibles, safety orientations, drills, and dressing for the weather.
We want to thank many people for making it such a positive and fun learning experience. Our staff and volunteers did an outstanding job. Thank you, Michael LaGuire, Phyllis Hackett, Angie Bowers, Jolie Tulley, Jamie Smith, SCS staff Julia Tawney, and AMSEA staff Eric Van Cise, Lily Herwald, Jeff Pearson, Amanda Johnson and Jerry Dzugan.
We received generous support from organizations and businesses in town. The firehall provided staff and an excellent program for our group as well as space for our camp staff to run a simulated firefighting activity. The Sitka Sportsman’s Association graciously allowed us to use their property for a morning of building emergency shelters. Absolute Tree Care provided quantities of material to use in building the shelters. We also want to thank Harrigan Centennial Hall staff for their work setting up our rooms and for their flexibility.
