Sitka’s Health Care
Dear Editor: Human relationships are brittle sometimes. Uncertainties, sudden changes, unexpected events, even relatives and friends, organizations and planet earth, accumulate sources of distress, both shallow and deep. Transitory or permanent. And let’s face it, folks, we are all under stress. A lot of stress both perceived and percolating.
Sometimes it’s tough to be a human being.
But this might be a good week to think about Sitka as a community of beautiful diversity – terribly complex, impossible to understand – but a shared treasure. It’s a privilege to live here, however long or short. You should hear the raving comments tourists from Los Angeles make about Sitka! Summer and visitors sharpen my awareness of what a truly remarkable place this is.
On Aug. 28, 2018, the Assembly made an extremely difficult decision to proceed with “merging” two major health organizations. Eleven months ago.
Today, this week, major changes are being made in Sitka’s health care systems. Great efforts have been made to prepare us.
Now, how we respond can make a difference. We citizens CAN make a difference in our human relationships, in our future care, how the new organization works. Or, doesn’t.
I propose we all make an extra effort this week to be kind and grateful and supportive of all the care received in the past, with a little extra appreciation for the efforts a lot of people are making. Sometimes I think half the employed residents of Sitka are taking care of the other half of the population. We all matter.
Our shared community health will be influenced by how each of us, individually, responds to these changes. Here is an opportunity to be more fully aware of what kind of town we want to be.
Cheers to Sitka, to Sitkans. And thank you!
Nancy Yaw Davis, Sitka
