Defeating Don Young
Dear Editor: I just completed Bob Woodward’s recent book, ‘‘Fear.’’ The only new information that I read in the book was that Bob Mueller said of Alaska Representative Don Young: “That Crook.”
It is time to defeat Don Young, so that Alaskans can have a U.S. representative that is respected and can function.
It is my understanding that he has been stripped years ago of his ability to be a committee chairman or now the minority committee chairman, due to disciplinary action. Thus, Alaskans are receiving no benefit to his longevity.
Please support Alyse Galvin in her efforts to defeat Don Young.

Ben Franklin Closing
Dear Editor: I’ve worked for the second and third generation Andersens for the 33 years I’ve lived in Sitka.
Linda and Steve have decided to retire while they can and are young enough to do so.
Linda and Steve and their family, Hadley and Emmitt, have been a large part of our Sitka lifestyle. They have been involved in sports and many Sitka functions over the years and still continue to do so. Linda and Steve are the kindest and most generous two people I have ever known. They are more concerned about our families as if we were all related.
They support our community with donations and their time. The closing of Ben Franklin is going to leave a big void in Sitka and the surrounding villages that depend on supplies that are available at Ben Franklin – sometimes items that aren’t available in Anchorage and Juneau. Even our locals are amazed at the variety the store carries.
The store has been for sale since October of 2018 and not one person or company has shown any interest in acquiring it, which is surprising to the employees and customers.
Best of luck to Linda and Steve, but so sad for us who count on the store being here and the items that are available to us.

Dunleavy Recall
Dear Editor: Organizers across Alaska are pleased to announce the first stage of a recall effort to remove Governor Mike Dunleavy from office. This recall effort is a grassroots movement involving Alaskans, many of whom voted for Governor Dunleavy in 2018, who recognize that he has violated Alaska law and the Alaska Constitution and seek to use our citizen power to remove him from office.
In many communities across Alaska, Sitka included, events will be held tomorrow, August 1, to begin collecting signatures for the recall application. Registered voters in Sitka are encouraged to stop by the Unitarian Universalist hall (entrance on Spruce Street) from 4 to 7 p.m. in order to sign the application and to learn more about the next steps in the recall process.
Anyone looking to sign but unable to make it to tomorrow’s event can take heart – signature gatherers will be around town for at least a few days after this initial event. Even those who are able to sign this time around will have a chance to sign a second time once our application is certified and a recall petition begins circulation. We look forward to many good conversations and working together on a better path for Alaska!
Stephen Courtright, Sitka,
on behalf of Recall Dunleavy
